    Teaching digital and global law for digital and global students: creating students as producers in a Hong Kong Internet Law class

    In an increasingly globalised and digitalised society and economy, legal education needs to foster a different skill set among students from that taught traditionally. Law students need practice in responding to a variety of scenarios and contexts, as well as developing creative and critical thinking skills. The "student as producer" approach provides opportunities for students to build such skills by having students produce work that could benefit their fellow classmates and future cohorts, and contribute to the discipline's knowledge base. We present a case study of a final year undergraduate law course, Internet and the Law, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong where we used the student as producer approach, collaborated with external organisations and used digital tools to foster global and digital-savvy law students. Using a mixed-methods approach we highlight successes and limitations of using the "student as producer" approach, digital tools and an internationalised curriculum in our law classroom. Overall, students and staff found the approach successful in providing global and digital law students with practical skills. We also identified limitations and challenges to be addressed in future projects. Our findings speak to broader themes of active engagement, contributions, and practical knowledge for law students in their learning and future careers

    Floquet Engineering of Magnetism in Topological Insulator Thin Films

    Dynamic manipulation of magnetism in topological materials is demonstrated here via a Floquet engineering approach using circularly polarized light. Increasing the strength of the laser field, besides the expected topological phase transition, the magnetically doped topological insulator thin film also undergoes a magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism, whose critical behavior strongly depends on the quantum quenching. In sharp contrast to the equilibrium case, the non-equilibrium Curie temperatures vary for different time scale and experimental setup, not all relying on change of topology. Our discoveries deepen the understanding of the relationship between topology and magnetism in the non-equilibrium regime and extend optoelectronic device applications to topological materials

    Incidence of MgII absorbers towards Blazars and the GRB/QSO puzzle

    In order to investigate the origin of the excess of strong MgII systems towards GRB afterglows as compared to QSO sightlines, we have measured the incidence of MgII absorbers towards a third class of objects: the Blazars. This class includes the BL Lac object population for which a tentative excess of MgII systems had already been reported. We observed with FORS1 at the ESO-VLT 42 Blazars with an emission redshift 0.8<z_em<1.9, to which we added the three high z northern objects belonging to the 1Jy BL Lac sample. We detect 32 MgII absorbers in the redshift range 0.35-1.45, leading to an excess in the incidence of MgII absorbers compared to that measured towards QSOs by a factor ~2, detected at 3 sigma. The amplitude of the effect is similar to that found along GRB sightlines. Our analysis provides a new piece of evidence that the observed incidence of MgII absorbers might depend on the type of background source. In front of Blazars, the excess is apparent for both 'strong' (w_ r(2796) > 1.0 A) and weaker (0.3 < w_r(2796) < 1.0 A) MgII systems. The dependence on velocity separation with respect to the background Blazars indicates, at the ~1.5 sigma level, a potential excess for beta = v/c ~0.1. We show that biases involving dust extinction or gravitational amplification are not likely to notably affect the incidence of MgII systems towards Blazars. Finally we discuss the physical conditions required for these absorbers to be gas entrained by the powerful Blazar jets. More realistic numerical modelling of jet-ambient gas interaction is required to reach any firm conclusions as well as repeat observations at high spectral resolution of strong MgII absorbers towards Blazars in both high and low states.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures.     Anthropogenic Influences on 2019 July Precipitation Extremes Over the Mid–Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River

    Understanding the driving factors for precipitation extremes matters for adaptation and mitigation measures against the changing hydrometeorological hazards in Yangtze River basin, a habitable area that provides water resources for domestic, farming, and industrial needs. However, the region is naturally subject to major floods linked to monsoonal heavy precipitation during May–September. This study aims to quantify anthropogenic influences on the changing risk of 2-week-long precipitation extremes such as the July 2019 extreme cases, as well as events of shorter durations, over the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River basin (MLYRB). Precipitation extremes with different durations ranging from 1-day to 14-days maximum precipitation accumulations are investigated. Gridded daily precipitations based on nearly 2,400 meteorological stations across China are used to define maximum accumulated precipitation extremes over the MLYRB in July during 1961–2019. Attribution analysis is conducted by using the Met Office HadGEM3-GA6 modeling system, which comprises two sets of 525-member ensembles for 2019. One is forced with observed sea-surface temperatures (SSTs), sea-ice and all forcings, and the other is forced with preindustrialized SSTs and natural forcings only. The risk ratio between the exceedance probabilities estimated from all-forcing and natural-forcing simulations is calculated to quantify the anthropogenic contribution to the changing risks of the July 2019–like precipitation extremes. The results reveal that anthropogenic warming has reduced the likelihood of 2019-like 14-days heavy precipitation over the mid–lower reaches of the Yangtze River by 20%, but increased that of 2-days extremes by 30%

    Primary and malignant cholangiocytes undergo CD40 mediated Fas dependent Apoptosis, but are insensitive to direct activation with exogenous fas ligand

    Introduction Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare malignancy of the biliary tract, the incidence of which is rising, but the pathogenesis of which remains uncertain. No common genetic defects have been described but it is accepted that chronic inflammation is an important contributing factor. We have shown that primary human cholangiocyte and hepatocyte survival is tightly regulated via co-operative interactions between two tumour necrosis family (TNF) receptor family members; CD40 and Fas (CD95). Functional deficiency of CD154, the ligand for CD40, leads to a failure of clearance of biliary tract infections and a predisposition to cholangiocarcinoma implying a direct link between TNF receptor-mediated apoptosis and the development of cholangiocarcinoma. Aims To determine whether malignant cholangiocytes display defects in CD40 mediated apoptosis. By comparing CD40 and Fas-mediated apoptosis and intracellular signalling in primary human cholangiocytes and three cholangiocyte cell lines. Results Primary cholangiocytes and cholangiocyte cell lines were relatively insensitive to direct Fas-mediated killing with exogenous FasL when compared with Jurkat cells, which readily underwent Fas-mediated apoptosis, but were extremely sensitive to CD154 stimulation. The sensitivity of cells to CD40 activation was similar in magnitude in both primary and malignant cells and was STAT-3 and AP-1 dependent in both. Conclusions 1) Both primary and malignant cholangiocytes are relatively resistant to Fas–mediated killing but show exquisite sensitivity to CD154, suggesting that the CD40 pathway is intact and fully functional in both primary and malignant cholangiocytes 2) The relative insensitivity of cholangiocytes to Fas activation demonstrates the importance of CD40 augmentation of Fas dependent death in these cells. Agonistic therapies which target CD40 and associated intracellular signalling pathways may be effective in promoting apoptosis of malignant cholangiocytes
